Sgraffito Plate Workshop – All Levels
£150
Friday 27th March | 10am – 3pm
Explore the expressive surface-decorating technique of sgraffito in this relaxed, hands-on one-day workshop.
Suitable for complete beginners and those looking to build on existing skills, this course will guide you through making and decorating a clay plate using slab-building techniques. You’ll apply coloured slip and carve through the surface to reveal striking patterns beneath. The workshop is led by experienced ceramicist Wa Liu, who will support you through every stage of the process.
You’ll be introduced to simple design ideas, carving tools, and techniques for achieving clean, confident marks. With step-by-step demonstrations, individual guidance, and plenty of time to experiment, this workshop is a wonderful opportunity to develop new skills, build creative confidence, and enjoy a day immersed in clay. No prior experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to play.
Working in a small, friendly group of up to six participants, you’ll enjoy a calm and meditative making experience. You’ll leave with new skills and a unique, functional ceramic plate. Finished pieces will be fired and ready for collection from Sheen Pottery within four weeks of the workshop, and you’ll be notified by email when it’s ready.
About the Tutor – Wa Liu
Wa began her ceramics journey in Hong Kong in 2014, where a personal interest in clay led to an apprenticeship with a local potter. She later moved to London, completing work placements and working as an artist assistant with established ceramists between 2018 and 2020.
After returning to Hong Kong, Wa spent five years teaching ceramics to students from diverse backgrounds before returning to London in 2025 to continue developing her practice.
Working with both wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, Wa specialises in sculptural and functional ceramics. Her teaching approach is adaptive and inclusive, supporting a range of learning styles and experience levels while fostering a safe, encouraging studio environment.
