Hand-Building Larger Pots with Celia MacPherson

Join talented ceramic artist Celia MacPherson for an inspiring 4 hour workkshop exploring the art of hand-building larger pots using the traditional coiling technique.

You’ll learn how to build form and structure using Ashraf Hanna, a specialist hand-building clay, while experimenting with surface decoration to create distinctive pieces with your own unique finish.

Celia brings a wealth of experience and a truly international perspective to her practice, making this a wonderful opportunity to explore both the process and creative possibilities of working with clay.

The workshop runs from 10am–2pm. During the day, you’ll create one peice, which can be finished by carving, or with slip and sgraffito before we fire it.

The decoration can take alot of time, so you may not finish the peice in the session, you are welcome to take it home to continue working on and bring it back to us for firing. These pots will be unglazed, but high fire to vitrify the clay.

Once your piece has been fired it will be ready for collection about four weeks after workshop. We’ll email you as soon as your pot is ready to collect.

About the Artist

Celia MacPherson is a ceramic artist whose practice is deeply rooted in a lifelong connection with clay, history and cultural exchange. Raised in Cyprus, with its rich and ancient pottery tradition, and later living and working across East Africa, Dubai and the UK, Celia’s work reflects a truly global perspective.

Inspired by ceramics as an ancient and shared human language, MacPherson creates contemporary vessels with a sense of timelessness. Her work celebrates the beauty of connection, history and imperfection, bringing together traditional influences with a distinctly contemporary approach.

Celia is currently exhibiting at Sheen Pottery until 31 October, making this workshop a particularly exciting opportunity to spend a day learning from and creating your work alongside her.
