Mixed Ceramic Techniques 6 Week Course - All levels

£360

This 6-week pottery course is ideal for anyone new to working with clay or for those who’ve completed a beginner’s course and want to take the next step. Sessions run once a week on Tuesdays.

You’ll be introduced to both wheel throwing and hand-building techniques in this course, allowing you to explore different methods of working with clay.

Class sizes are kept small (maximum 6 students) to ensure plenty of individual support and a focused, hands-on learning environment. If you’re a continuing student or already have some experience, you can work with the tutor to plan a personal project. Together, you’ll set goals and map out how to achieve them during the course.

Health and safety guidance will be provided in the first session and reinforced as needed throughout. To get the most out of the course, we recommend arriving on time and attending every class, as the content builds progressively each week.

Before booking, please make sure to read the Terms and Conditions under the "Classes" section of the website. You’ll be asked to agree to these when you register.

  • Week 1 – Hand-Building Basics
Get hands-on with the fundamentals of hand-building techniques. You'll explore coiling, pinch pots, and slab construction — essential methods for creating forms without the wheel.

Week 2 – Introduction to Wheel Throwing
Step up to the wheel and learn how to centre clay — the key to successful throwing. You'll begin practicing simple cylinder forms, which serve as the building blocks for most wheel-thrown pottery.

Week 3 – Developing Your Technique
Now that you’ve tried both hand-building and throwing, choose your preferred method and start creating more defined shapes. This week is about building confidence and refining your skills.

Week 4 – Shaping and Trimming
Learn how to trim your pots to enhance their shape, balance, and overall finish. This stage is key to giving your pieces a more professional and polished look.

    Week 5 – Creative Exploration
Use this session to experiment freely with your chosen technique. Try new forms, combine methods, or revisit a skill you’d like to improve — this is your chance to play and explore.

Week 6 – Glazing and Finishing Touches
Bring your creations to life with colour. You’ll be introduced to basic glazing techniques and can choose from a range of studio glazes to decorate your work before the final firing.

  • Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to grow your existing skills, this course offers a welcoming, hands-on introduction to the world of ceramics. You'll explore both hand-building and wheel-throwing in a relaxed, small-group setting — perfect for focused learning and creative exploration. With expert guidance, personalised support, and plenty of studio time, you’ll build confidence, develop your own style, and leave with a collection of finished, glazed pieces you can be proud of.

  • You're welcome to keep as much of your work from the course as you like. Any pieces you choose to keep will be weighed at the leather-hard stage, after trimming. A fee of £10 per kilo applies, which covers the cost of clay, glazes, and both firings. We encourage students to be thoughtful about what they choose to keep, focusing on pieces they're proud of or would like to see finished.
